Homeschool Organization

Picture It...You come home from a beautiful vacation filled with white sand and palm trees. Ah, it feels good to be home - relaxed and recharged but... As you settle in, it is there staring at you - your disorganized homeschool classroom or space.

What to do? Let's get organized, Beachbum style!
Help is on the way!

Paper - The "white noise", elephant in the room

Categorize all paper, curriculum, resources, craft material, etc.
The way I have organized my paper issues are by making categories of 3 or 4 per area in your space. The following is the schematic used in the Beachbum Classroom:

  •  Teacher desk area - inboxes for each child, resources and spare curriculum in file box on the metal book shelf. Magazine holders are placed on top of my desktop to house the teacher's edition/keys that I might need along with my teacher binder.

  • Mini Paper Depot - This is an unused dresser that houses all the spare paper for both my classroom and my office. Confession: the top drawer holds some craft material that we use weekly or in conjunction with the cardstock/construction paper.

  • File Room - Any long term filing gets placed into a separate area (one side of my walk-in closet) where it will not be in the way of daily usage like the classroom has.

Homeschool Space or Classroom

This was addressed indirectly abov e - Paper Depot, File Room, etc. I believe in compartmentalizing; make areas comprised of 3-4 items or tasks. A children's library and Mommy library are separated into two different corners and then, of course, student desks are placed in the center of the room to see board, maps and calendar on the wall.

Time

"When do I do all of this?" Schedule blocks of time so that the clock does not own you.  (That's another post.) Sundays ate usually my planning or restructuring days. I get a cup of coffee and only give myself 90 minutes maximum (once again another post). If you need another day for the organization, then use a Time block that normally wouldn't have too many things scheduled into it (ie.  after dinner, when the children go to bed).

Whether on the web or the waves,
Happy Surfing Everyone!
